Faces of ARFID Series, Randee

Randee and I connected through the ARFID Facebook pages, which are a great resource if you’re struggling and need to find a group of people who understand what you’re going through. There are several great FB accounts and if you'd like links to them you can contact me via the CONTACT page! Randee is a mom to two beautiful boys and is married to an amazing man who is supportive to her. She works in wireless tech support and is currently in therapy for her ARFID. She has also done a great YouTube video that I’ll also share at the end of the interview. Please be sure to check it out!

At what age did you realize you had ARFID:

It started when I was 7; I realized when I was 27.

What are your limitations with ARFID (food/friends/social activities etc.?)

Going out to eat with friends used to be horrible but my new group though is completely understanding.

List of safe foods:

Meats no sauces, only dry herbs, fruits, pasta, and shellfish.

What steps have you taken to try to get help?

I am currently doing Skype sessions with a therapist

If you have had treatment, what kind of therapy/treatment have you received?

Just started with a therapist.

What is the most frustrating thing about ARFID for you?

People feeling like I’m insulting them or being rude when I refuse to try something.

What words of encouragement would you offer a person newly diagnosed with ARFID?

Deep breaths and go at a pace you’re comfortable with.

Do you have anxiety/depression because of your ARFID? Are you generally happy with your situation? Can you share a couple sentences about how it feels to have ARFID?

Going to try something gives off the same brain response as if I was trying to cut off my arm. The anxiety and panic over it is too much to bear.

What do you want society to know about the stigma of ARFID?

That this isn’t a choice; it’s not just picky eating; we can’t just turn it off.

Is there anything else you would like to add—anything that’s unique to your situation?

I knew something was off when I was little. My panic attacks can get so bad that I will rock myself in a corner crying my eyes out.

Here Randee explains her story: https://youtu.be/vWLaD7zZTKw
